The Borgholm Candelabrum
The Borgholm Candelabrum, cast at the Brass Foundry ”Lindstedts Gelbgjuteri” of Öland from an original, found under the floor of ”Drabantsalen” (the Guards Hall), with the following Certificate of Genuineness, signed by Lars Sjöberg, Curator at the National Museum of Fine Arts:
Candelabrum in the fashion of the early half or middle of the 17th century, produced from an original found in Borgholm Castle under a floor that is considered to be laid about 1650.
The candelabrum was lacking its top part. A reconstruction was made possible through the study of a similar candelabrum from the same time bought by the National Museum for Läckö Castle.
The candelabrum has a cast, round base plate; a baluster shaped column and a branch with three sockets with large, round wax protectors. The branch is latticed with an animal-like ornamentation, which was typical of the Renaissance in Sweden and Northern Europe during the first half of the 17th century.
The reconstruction work, which was done in collaboration with Lars Sjöberg of the National Museum of Fine Arts, had the aim and direction to create a reliable new production of exact copies within the tradition-bound craftsmanship of the foundry.
The Brass Foundry Lindstedt & Son has made the copies, of which this unique series is numbered 1 to 100; copy number 1 is owned by King Charles XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
