Icons of Power, Art by Andreas Englund
28 March – 1 November 2026
This season’s major exhibition Icons of Power invites you into the visual world of artist Andreas Englund.
Andreas Englund is internationally renowned for his photorealistic oil paintings, in which heroes and historic figures meet the realities of everyday life with both warmth and humour. Using traditional painting techniques, Andreas captures the small, embarrassing and deeply human moments most of us can identify with.
One of his most popular characters is the aging superhero who – despite his cape and superpowers – struggles with the same mundane, everyday challenges as everybody else.
The Époque Royale series depicts the Renaissance kings. Here, Englund highlights how little our self-perception has changed throughout the centuries. By allowing historic ideals to reflect modern expressions, he creates a playful parallel between the past and the present. These works of art take on a distinctive meaning here at Borgholm Castle, as its historical setting brings the former periods to life and give the paintings an almost cinematic presence.
Welcome to an exhibition where every image tells its very own tale.
The exhibition can be found on the castle’s first floor, where the large open space and the views over the Kalmar Strait become part of the overall experience. Instead of the original paintings, you will see large high-quality prints that perfectly suit the monumental surroundings of the castle.
Andreas Englund has exhibited across all of Europe, North America and Asia, and his work can be found in both private and public collections.
